It has been an interesting seven days for the UConn women’s team since their loss to Rutgers a week ago. Nicole Wolff declared that she would not return for her final year of eligibility and injured Brittany Hunter returned to practice. Their distance from the top of the Polls doubled, as they dropped from forth to eighth in the AP Poll and from third to sixth in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, despite a convincing 13 point win on the road at Texas. And the Huskies returned to their winning ways at home, beating lowly Providence College by a score of 84-58 at a less than packed Hartford Civic Center.

After the events surrounding last season’s two meetings with Rutgers University, this was the game that every University of Connecticut women’s basketball season ticket holder had circled on their calendar at the beginning of the season. While the game lived up to the fan’s expectations, the outcome certainly did not, as the No. 9 Scarlet Knights beat the No. 4 Huskies in a thriller by a score of 60-56 at a sold out Gampel Pavilion in Storrs.

The UConn Huskies - with a record of 20-1 - are, to put it mildly, on fire. Things have not come easy on the basketball court at UConn for freshman forward Marcus Johnson. Heading into Sunday's match-up with the University of New Hampshire, the Los Angeles native had scored just 4 points in seven games while averaging just under eight minutes per game. But with Denham Brown sidelined (sprained knee), Johnson got his first big opportunity to make his mark. While he has struggled somewhat to find his role offensively, he has impressed his head coach with his effort, defense, and steady improvement in practices. He was rewarded with his first career start against New Hampshire.

It was Monday, January 17th, and the day couldn't have been scripted any better for Ben Gordon. As the game clock ran down at Madison Square Garden, Gordon exploded down the right side of the lane and floated up a tough one-handed 10-foot runner. The shot seemed to float over the New York City skyline before falling back to earth smoothly through the net...swish. In front of nearly 50 friends and family, Gordon, from nearby Mt. Vernon New York, took down the New York Knicks with his buzzer beating acrobatics and 13-point fourth quarter explosion. The last second victory extended Chicago's win streak to seven, and ran the Bulls record to 15-5 over their last 20 games.

The UConn Huskies outlasted a tough Seton Hall team Monday evening in New Jersey as they got out to a fast start before early foul trouble flustered the Huskies and their offense sputtered. Seton Hall's transition game would keep the Pirates close, but in the end UConn's relentless inside attack and halfcourt defense would be the difference as Connecticut pulled out a 77-68 road victory, giving the 11-3 Huskies a 3-1 conference record heading into Saturday's match-up with Pittsburgh at Gampel Pavilion.
