
Clemente Mendoza threw a seven-inning complete game for the Tigers in the first game of a twinbill.
NORWICH – Clemente Mendoza tossed a seven-inning complete game to lead the Connecticut Tigers to a 2-1 win over the Auburn Doubledays in the first game of a doubleheader played before 2,030 fans on a glorious summer evening at Dodd Stadium in Norwich on Saturday night. Auburn came back to capture the nightcap by the score of 1-1.
In the first game, the Tigers scored first with two runs in the bottom of the third against. Auburn starter Sean Nolin issued a walk to Connecticut DH Tyson Kendrick to lead off the inning. Kendrick was then forced out at second base when left fielder grounded into a forceout. Second baseman Alexander Nunez followed with a single, with Enos advancing to second. Enos was driven home on an RBI single by catcher Julio Rodriguez. First baseman James Robbins drove home Nunez later in the inning to give Connecticut a 2-0 advantage.
Mendoza pitched the second complete game of the season for the Tigers, allowing one run on five hits without a walk and six strikeouts.
In game two, the Doubledays scored the only run of the game off of Tigers starter Patrick Lawson in the second inning. Left fielder Steve McQuail led off the inning by reaching on an error Connecticut shortsop Brett Anderson. Auburn catcher Jack Murphy followed with a double, advancing McQuail to third.
Right fielder Jonathan Jones drove home MQuail with a single to left-center giving Auburn a 1-0 lead.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 29-27, and remain one game in back of the first-place Vermont Lake Monsters in the NY-Penn League Stedler Division race. The Doubledays fall to 22-33.
Connecticut and Auburn conclude their four-game weekend set on Sunday afternoon, before taking a short break for the NY-Penn League All-Star Game to be played on Tuesday in Staten Island. The Tigers return to action on Wednesday when they will open a six-game homestand with the first of two games vs. the Tri-City ValleyCats. First pitch is slated for 7:05 at The Dodd.
