All-Star pitcher Pat Ryan has been signed by the Boston Red Sox organization.
BRIDGEPORT – It’s the nature of the beast in independent league baseball, of course – players who do well get snatched up by MLB organizations. With pitchers, it’s rare that anyone with anything left in the tank makes it past Mother’s Day without being signed by an organization – including the majors, the Mexican League, Taiwan and Korea. But Pat Ryan, a 26-year-old right-hander for the Bridgeport Bluefish, flew under the radar for the entire first half of the Atlantic League season. But that’s no longer the case as the Boston Red Sox have signed Ryan, who will report to Single-A Salem of the Carolina League. Ryan’s last appearance for the ’Fish was in the All-Star Game, where he threw one perfect inning for the victorious Liberty Division.

In the first half of the 2010 season, Ryan appeared in 19 games (six starts) for the Bluefish, posting a 5-1 record in 58.1 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander held opposing hitters to a .183 batting average. After beginning the year in the bullpen, he acclimated well to the starting rotation, becoming one of the Atlantic Leagues top hurlers. Pat led the league with a 1.39 ERA and ranked fourth with 65 strikeouts.

“We are very glad for Pat and wish him the best of luck,” says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. “He has transitioned extremely well into the starting role and has been a solid anchor for this pitching staff.”

Ryan joined the ‘Fish after spending the majority of 2009 with West Tennessee (AA, Mariners) of the Southern League. In 2008, the 26-year-old made his first appearance at the Double-A level with Huntsville (Brewers) of the Southern League. In 39 games, he posted a 2.52 ERA with six saves and 38 strikeouts over 61 innings of work. After joining the Bluefish, Ryan appeared in 21 games, chalking four saves and recording a 0.73 ERA with 25 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .204 batting average in 24.1 innings.

In 207 career minor league appearances, Ryan has a record of 23-17 with a 2.60 ERA. He has recorded 20 saves and 311 strikeouts over 391.1 innings pitched, while holding opposing sluggers to a .234 batting average.

Miguel Saladin.
To fill the roster spot, the Bridgeport Bluefish announced the signing of pitcher Miguel Saladin. The seven-year pro will be making his Atlantic League debut in the Park City. A former prospect in the Astros and Reds systems, Saladin spent 2009 with Saltillo of the Mexican League (AAA) where he appeared in 44 games, posted a 3.05 ERA in 41.1 innings, and chalked up 26 saves.

The newest member of the Bluefish reached as high as AAA with the New Orleans Zephyrs (Houston) and the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati). Saladin has a career ERA of 3.48 with 297 strikeouts in 365 innings. The 5-11, 200-lb. right-hander from San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Houston in 1995.

In a separate roster move, the Bluefish have released pitcher Marc Kaiser.
