UNCASVILLE – Portland High School has been selected as the Connecticut Sun High School Girls’ Basketball Team of the Week for the week of Jan. 4-10.

On Tue., Jan. 5, Portland improved to 8-0 with a hard-fought 40-37 win on the road against traditional Shoreline Conference powerhouse and defending CIAC Class S champion Old Lyme. The Highlanders added a victory over Westbrook three days later.

This is the fourth season the Connecticut Sun has recognized a Team of the Week. Each winner will receive a commemorative plaque and a congratulatory letter from Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault.

The Team of the Week is part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the Connecticut Sun to highlight local high school girls’ basketball. The Sun have also hosted the CIAC Championship luncheon and the four state title games, and the team will recognize this year’s four state championship teams during a ceremony at halftime of a regular season game during the 2010 season.
